Trump and Putin Discuss Ukraine’s Future and Nuclear Arms Reduction

by admin477351

A recent phone call between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin covered two monumental topics: a new, European-led security model for Ukraine and the long-term prospect of nuclear arms reduction.

Trump’s vision for Ukraine, which he had previously detailed to President Volodymyr Zelensky and European officials on August 18, involves Europe taking the primary responsibility for the nation’s security. This represents a significant departure from the previous U.S.-centric approach.

In this new model, Europe would provide the “significant security guarantees” for Kyiv. Trump has publicly stated that the United States will transition to a “backup” role, ready to support its allies but not to lead the security efforts in the region.

The conversation also touched upon a post-conflict future. Trump revealed that an August 15 meeting in Alaska included talks with Putin about their shared strategic goal of eventually reducing their nuclear arsenals, a key objective once the war in Ukraine concludes.
