A planned review of the US-Mexico-Canada agreement (usmca) is now in serious doubt after president Donald Trump abruptly “terminated” all trade negotiations with Canada.
The move was sparked by a Canadian ad from Ontario that featured a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan . Trump, who has “soured on” the usmca deal he negotiated in his first term, called the ad “fake.”
The ad was a protest against 35% US tariffs on Canadian goods. Trump accused Canada of “egregious behavior” and trying to interfere with US supreme court hearings on those tariffs.
The ad has also been criticized by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation for using “selective audio” to “misrepresent” the full speech.
Canadian prime minister mark carney had recently met with Trump to ease tensions ahead of the usmca review. Now, with talks suspended, the future of the trade deal is uncertain.
