A new trail in the Peak District is a fantastic new option for families and pet owners. The 62-mile Steel Cotton Rail Trail, while offering challenging hikes, also includes many sections that are perfect for those “with young families or old dogs.”
The 14-section route, linking Manchester and Sheffield, was designed with “something for everyone.” This includes numerous flat, gentle, and accessible walks along scenic canal towpaths and peaceful riverbanks.
A great example is the stretch along the historic Peak Forest Tramway Trail. This wide, level path, once used by horse-drawn carts, is ideal for children, pushchairs, and dogs. The amble along the pastoral River Goyt is another mellow and easy-going option.
The trail’s “rail-pegged” design is a major plus for families. You can easily plan a short, manageable walk between two stations, perhaps stopping at a cafe, without the commitment of a long, circular route.
This new, well-marked path makes the “eye-calming” landscapes and “post-industrial” history of the Peak District accessible to all. It’s a perfect, healthy, and engaging day out for the whole family.
