Dubai is set to enhance its aviation infrastructure with the development of a 50-kilometer autonomous people mover network at Al Maktoum International Airport. This ambitious project will facilitate passenger movement across the expansive airport through nine stations. The construction is slated for completion by December 2031, aligning with the airport’s first phase opening in 2032. This driverless underground rail system is poised to expand further, eventually featuring 14 stations as the airport undergoes additional phases of development.
Intended to surpass existing systems like those at Dallas Fort Worth and JFK airports, the network aims to become the world’s largest automated people mover system. Al Maktoum International Airport is on course to accommodate up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. The initial phase will feature the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover system, which will boost the annual passenger capacity to 130 million.
The airport is not only focusing on internal connectivity but also on integrating broader transport links. Plans are underway for an Airport Express Link, which will connect Al Maktoum International Airport with Dubai International Airport. Future connections are also anticipated with Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, further enhancing the airport’s accessibility.
This development represents a significant leap in Dubai’s efforts to position Al Maktoum International Airport as a leading global aviation hub. The introduction of an advanced automated transport system underscores the emirate’s commitment to leveraging technology for enhanced passenger experience and operational efficiency. As the airport evolves, it is expected to play a pivotal role in accommodating the growing demands of global air travel.
