A flawless innings of 82 from Aiden Markram laid the keel for South Africa’s dominant 98-run victory over Australia. The opener’s composure and class at the top of the order provided the stability his team needed to build a match-winning total of 8-296.
Markram looked in complete control from the outset, playing with elegance and precision. He shared a crucial 92-run opening stand and seemed destined for a century before falling to Ben Dwarshuis. His knock ensured Australia was on the back foot for most of the first innings.
His performance was the bedrock upon which the rest of the innings was built. Temba Bavuma contributed a solid 65, and a late flurry from Wiaan Mulder pushed the score towards 300. But it was Markram who set the tone and momentum for the visitors.
This substantial total gave South African spinner Keshav Maharaj the freedom to attack, which he did with devastating results (5-33). Markram’s batting excellence created the conditions for his team’s bowling excellence to shine through.
