The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached a critical point, with the Israeli army declaring roads leading to aid distribution centers “combat zones.” This alarming development follows the temporary closure of facilities operated by the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) and a stark warning from the UN aid chief about “deliberate choices” leading to civilian deaths.
The GHF’s decision to temporarily halt operations was prompted by a series of deadly incidents near its distribution centers, including the tragic killing of 27 people in southern Gaza on Tuesday. While the Israeli military is investigating, the repeated targeting of civilians near aid points has intensified international condemnation.
UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher condemned the “horrifying scenes” of Gazans being killed while simply trying to eat. He asserted that these deaths are the “outcome of a series of deliberate choices that have systematically deprived two million people of the essentials they need to survive.” His words highlight the systemic nature of the crisis.
Fletcher joined UN chief Antonio Guterres in calling for immediate, independent investigations and accountability for perpetrators. He reiterated the UN’s readiness and capacity to deliver aid, demanding the opening of all crossings, a lifting of aid restrictions, and the implementation of a ceasefire to alleviate the immense suffering in Gaza.
