The United Arab Emirates celebrated a historic achievement at the 2026 Asian Games when 18-year-old Mariam Kareem clinched the country’s first gold medal in the women’s 400m hurdles. Kareem’s performance was remarkable, setting a new Asian Games record with a time of 54.31 seconds, edging out Kazakhstan’s Adelina Zems by 0.27 seconds for the top spot. India’s Vithya Ramraj completed the podium, securing the bronze medal.

This victory represents the UAE’s second athletics medal at the Games, following a silver medal by 19-year-old Sulaiman Abdulrahman in the men’s 400m final, where he finished with a time of 44.99 seconds. Kareem’s gold medal win was especially notable as she improved significantly from her personal best of 55.14 seconds, which she recorded during the qualifying rounds.

The UAE Athletics Federation President, Major General Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al Murr, extended his congratulations to Kareem on her outstanding achievement. Her success has not only brought pride to her nation but also set a new benchmark for future athletes in the region.
