UAE and Saudi Arabia Strengthen Alliance to Counter Houthi Threat in Yemen

by admin477351

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia have renewed their cooperation in efforts to counter Houthi military advances in Yemen, marking a significant development in the ongoing conflict. The UAE has agreed to resume financial support for Yemeni government forces, while Saudi Arabia has committed to providing air support to the anti-Houthi coalition. This renewed partnership comes amid rising concerns over increased Houthi aggression and attacks across the region.

This agreement could signify an improvement in the relationship between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which had been strained by disagreements over Yemen’s political future and the role of southern separatist forces. Previously, the UAE had trained and funded several southern military units, including the Giant Brigades, but had withdrawn its involvement in Yemen earlier this year.

Saudi Arabia has been a frequent target of drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthis, affecting airports and energy infrastructure. In response, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has launched a counteroffensive to reclaim territories such as those near Marib and the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, but progress has been limited.

Tensions have further escalated in the region, particularly in Aden, where a Houthi missile strike reportedly landed near the city’s airport as a passenger aircraft was preparing for departure. This attack followed another strike on a presidential palace, resulting in at least five deaths and 16 injuries.

The ongoing conflict poses significant regional security threats, prompting responses from neighboring countries. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has indicated that Egypt might take defensive measures to protect Saudi Arabia, while the United Kingdom is considering requests for additional military assistance.

Amidst this renewed Saudi-UAE coordination, the humanitarian crisis in Yemen continues to worsen. According to the United Nations, over 200,000 people have been displaced since August, exacerbating the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations operating in the area.
